Utilizing Earth Observations of Soil Freeze/Thaw Data and Atmospheric Concentrations to Estimate Cold Season Methane Emissions in the Northern High Latitudes

چکیده

The northern wetland methane emission estimates have large uncertainties. Inversion models are a qualified method to estimate the fluxes and emissions in latitudes but when atmospheric observations sparse, only as good their priori estimates. Thus, improving is competent way reduce uncertainties enhance sparsely sampled regions. Here, we use novel integrate remote sensing soil freeze/thaw (F/T) status from SMOS satellite better capture seasonality of high latitude. F/T data provide daily information freezing state latitudes, this study, used define cold season and, thus, improve our knowledge seasonal cycle biospheric fluxes. implemented LPX-Bern DYPTOP model modified inversion CarbonTracker Europe-CH4. implementation shown be beneficial model’s flux Our results show that CH4 approximately 0.60 Tg lower than previously estimated, which corresponds 17% reduction emissions. This partly compensated by increased anthropogenic same area (0.23 Tg), also indicates could even larger contribution estimated here.

Cold season emissions dominate the Arctic tundra methane budget.

Arctic terrestrial ecosystems are major global sources of methane (CH4); hence, it is important to understand the seasonal and climatic controls on CH4 emissions from these systems. Here, we report year-round CH4 emissions from Alaskan Arctic tundra eddy flux sites and regional fluxes derived from aircraft data. We find that emissions during the cold season (September to May) account for ≥ 50% ...

Estimating wetland methane emissions from the northern high latitudes from 1990 to 2009 using artificial neural networks

[1] Methane (CH4) emissions from wetland ecosystems in nothern high latitudes provide a potentially positive feedback to global climate warming. Large uncertainties still remain in estimating wetland CH4 emisions at regional scales. Here we develop a statistical model of CH4 emissions using an artificial neural network (ANN) approach and field observations of CH4 fluxes. Six explanatory variabl...
